WSEA Classic Romans (and Movies) BOOK CLUB DESCRIPTION
We start each time with a fun quiz – the winner gets a prize! – that raises questions and topics of interest. After about an hour of free discussion about the book, we look ahead, and collectively suggest titles and choose one to read. If people have not had the chance to read the book of the month, they can come around 4 p.m. and participate in the choice of the following month.

Titles read: Since March 2020, we have read: Jane Austen, Emma; Charles Dickens, David Copperfield; Daphne Dumaurier, Jamaica Inn.; Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway; Washington Irving, “Rip van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”; Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol; Charlotte Bronte, Villette; Iris Murdoch, The Green Knight; Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray; Zora Neale Hurston, their eyes looked at God; Nella Larsen, Passage; Film “My Rainey’s Black Bottom”, dir. George C. Wolfe, adapted from the play by August Wilson; Clarice Lispector, Family Ties; Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera; Nancy Mitford, The Pursuit of Love; Langston Hughes, Not Without Laughing; Bram Stoker, Dracula; Karolina Pavlova, A Double Life; Nikolai Gogol, The Night Before Christmas; Truman Capote, A Christmas Memory; Dylan Thomas, A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

Next meeting: Sunday January 16, 2022, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Title to be discussed: Bleak House, by Charles Dickens (1852-53). We’ll read the first half, up to and including chapter 28, “The Ironmaster.”

Date / Time: Sundays once a month from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Location: Outdoor patio behind C&P Coffee House on California Ave SW (not far from Paper Boat Booksellers in West Seattle).
