Unfortunately, Daniel Craig’s time as James Bond is over. Hailed by many as the best Bond, Craig’s films are some pretty great action cinema, with his time as the character spanning 16 years.

The entire James Bond franchise is back to stream on Stan from this month (he disappeared for a little while). However, the last installment, No time to die, will also arrive on the Stan platform in 2023.

But without a chronological naming convention, how do you watch all the Craigs Bind movies in order? (If you want a ranking of all the Bond movies based on something less scientific, we’ve got you covered, too.)

Casino Royale (2006)

Based on the original James Bond novel by British author Ian Flemming, Casino Royale was the first Bond film starring Daniel Craig and the first in order. Stick to the source material pretty closely, Casino Royale is suave and more collected than many of the previous Bond films, which favor explosive action over tense scenes.

In this film, 007 is a new MI6 agent and is sent to Madagascar to bring down a criminal who finances terrorist organizations. The film centers on Casino Royale, where the criminal seeks to make money for said organizations – 007 shows up to gamble against him.

Quantum of Solace (2008)

Often considered Daniel Craig Bond’s worst film, Quantum of Comfort is the second film in chronological order. More of a personal tale of revenge, this film sees Bond go after those who blackmailed his former lover, uncovering an organization with eyes everywhere that MI6 didn’t know about.

If you’re going to skip any of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, this is the one to avoid. It’s not bad, but it lacks the quality of other films.

Skyfall (2012)

My favorite Bond movie and just a great movie, celestial fall starts with Leap off the grid. After a mission goes completely wrong, spies around the world have their covers blown – this forces MI6, the agency Bond is employed for, to relocate after being attacked.

This film is tense from start to finish, bringing back a dark story for the agency and a story of survival for its boss, M, played by Judi Dench. It’s really awesome. Don’t miss this movie.

Specter (2015)

The fourth film in the Craig James Bond quintet (a five-movie series), Bond is tasked with uncovering the sinister organization SPECTRE, after receiving a cryptic message from former MI6 spymaster Mr. celestial fall leads straight into Spectrum.

Bond is sent on an investigation to Rome and Mexico City to bring down SPECTRE, action and lawsuits abound. While Spectrumto like Quantum of Comfortis not one of the best Daniel Craig Bind movies, it’s worth watching if you want the whole story.

No Time to Die (2021)

The latest film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond, no time to die sends Craig off with a bang. Living in Jamaica after leaving MI6, Bond is thrown back into action when a former CIA colleague shows up and asks for help.

It’s a great movie and it might be Daniel Craig Bond’s best movie. Unfortunately, given that it came out last year, no time to die isn’t available to stream right now, but it will be coming to Stan next year.

Pre-title footage has become a staple of the James Bond film franchise. No time to dieThe opening of ‘sa rewrites the rulebook with the longest cold opening in the series’ history, encompassing an disconnected prologue, a showdown with the SPECTER assassins, and a continuation of all the threads of the plot. Daniel Craig’s Bond films.

RELATED: 10 Ways Sean Connery’s Bond Movies Still Hold Up Today

Back in the days the franchise began with the late and great Sean Connery as 007, when the trope wasn’t fully established, the first batch of opening scenes were a mixed bag.

6 Diamonds are forever

Blofeld with his team of scientists in Diamonds Are Forever

Connery’s last official production of Eon as Bond (he returned to the role over a decade later for the unofficial role Never say never), Diamonds are forever, follows on from its predecessor You only live twice with Bond’s globetrotting pursuit of a still-alive Blofeld. There are a few unsettling moments in this footage that openly question Bond’s characterization as a hero, such as needlessly suffocating a woman with her own bikini top.

There are some puzzling cartoonish touches too, like Bond having a mousetrap in his pocket to grab a henchman who is looking for his gun and Blofeld falling into a vat of goo. Even Bond’s humorous line is lazy: “Welcome to hell, Blofeld!

5 Dr No

John Strangeways in Jamaica in Dr No

For the majority, Dr No gives the Bond franchise a great start. Ursula Andress remains one of Bond’s most iconic girls, Joseph Wiseman remains one of Bond’s most iconic villains, and Terence Young has characterized 007 perfectly since the shift. But the opening streak leaves a lot to be desired, as the tradition of opening with a high-level action setting had yet to be established.

RELATED: 10 Ways The First James Bond Movie Dr. No Was A Success

As a result, the opening doesn’t show Bond at all. Instead, he sets up Bond’s mission with the murders of MI6 station chief John Strangways and his secretary in Jamaica. It’s an action scene that kicks off the plot right away, but now that Bond has become a cultural icon, it seems disconcerting that his first big screen release is taking so long to present him.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

4 You only live twice

James Bond fakes his death in You Only Live Twice

The opening scene of You only live twice apparently ends with Bond’s assassination. It takes a while to introduce 007, starting with the flight of a space capsule and cutting between various military figures trying to figure out what happened to him. When the movie finally gets to Bond, he’s in bed with a woman in Hong Kong before assassins storm in, shoot him, and his body is swallowed by the bed.

After the title streak, of course, it’s revealed that Bond’s death was just rigged to allow him to investigate Blofeld and take down SPECTER, but it’s a pretty exciting way to kick off the film – and perfectly sets up the moody and heartfelt theme of Nancy Sinatra song.

3 From Russia with love

James Bond in From Russia with Love opening scene

The opening scene of From Russia with love is deliciously subversive. The film begins with Bond being targeted by henchman Red Grant, played by Jaws‘Robert Shaw. Much to the public’s surprise, when Grant leaps up, he manages to kill Bond. For a second, it looks like Bond is dead and the movie will only last a few minutes – then it all turns out to be a training experience.

SPECTER trains his best assassins to face Bond in retaliation for the events of Dr No, and Grant’s abilities are unmatched. The ease with which Grant kills Decoy Bond in this training exercise sets up the brutal and genuinely lethal fight he’ll have with the real 007 on the Orient Express later in the movie.

2 Thunder clap

Jacques Bouvar disguised as a woman in Thunderball

Globally, Thunder clap is considered one of Connery’s weaker Bond films, but it ends strong with an astonishing underwater battle streak and it starts strong with a curvy opening action scene. Bond attends the funeral of an enemy agent, disappointed that he could not deliver the fatal blow, then goes to the widow’s house to pay homage to her.

RELATED: Ranking Every Villain In Sean Connery’s James Bond Movies

At first there doesn’t seem to be any action on the horizon, but the sequence takes a surprising turn when the Colonel’s widow turns out to be the Colonel himself in disguise – with high heels and stockings – ready to go. fight 007. This is one of the most intense and visceral fight scenes of the entire Connery era.

1 The golden finger

James Bond in Goldfinger opening scene

After Dr No and From Russia with love laid the groundwork, third Bond film – 1964 The golden finger – perfected the now familiar formula of the series. Like all other elements of The golden finger, the opening scene is the gold standard (pardon the pun) for the episodic 007 formula. Much like Gert Fröbe’s eponymous megalomaniac eccentric and the spectacular finale at Fort Knox, The golden fingerThe opening action scene set a high benchmark for what would ultimately become a well-worn franchise trope.

After the baffling revelation of Bond’s disguise (a faux duck strapped to the top of his jumpsuit), the spy gentleman climbs out of the water, plants explosive devices in a drug lab, then sneaks into a bar before blowing them up. . He takes off his jumpsuit to reveal a crisp white tuxedo underneath and coldly lights a cigarette as the lab explodes behind him. In the space of a few minutes, director Guy Hamilton perfectly reintroduces the character of Bond.

Movies are back on the big screen, but after a few months away the current stream of new releases can be a bit overwhelming. Problem solved: We’ve checked out what’s new and new and picked five must-see titles for your next trip to Cinema Nova, tucked away in Carlton’s Lygon Court.

Hungry afterwards? We fixed that too. We’ve paired each movie with a classic dish from Brunetti Classico, the iconic Italian coffee shop that towers over Lygon Court with its opulent display of cakes, pastries and pizza in shop windows.

Here’s our guide to the movies (and meals) to devour this Christmas.

Julia
It has to be argued that the world of modern cooking – in the United States, at least – has been largely shaped by Julia Child, and this documentary shows it in an often tantalizing style. This biopic provides a glimpse into Child’s life, from her early days working for the American spy ring during WWII, to her growing interest in cooking as she traveled the world – to her cookbook. revolutionary of 1961 and the decades of influence that followed.

Co-directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West (RBG) use a light touch with an emphasis on entertainment, in a flavorful take on the culinary icon. Talking heads, archival footage, and photos keep the pace going, but the real treat is getting a close look at some of his classic dishes. It’s not the type to see on an empty stomach.

Pair with: Aglio olio e peperoncino by Brunetti. This classic Italian pasta dish includes garlic, olive oil, spaghetti, chili peppers, and Parmesan, taking common ingredients and elevating them.

No time to die

It’s been a long time coming (even before the Covid delays), but Bond is back and No time to die worth the wait. With Daniel Craig in his last outing as 007 (which started with Casino Royale), it is ready to settle down. When that didn’t quite work, he retired to Jamaica; while in London, a top secret biological warfare lab is attacked and Specter prepares to hatch his latest evil plan.

Everything you could expect from a Bond movie is here, with plenty of glamorous locations, flashy gadgets, sharp clothing, and thrilling action. Craig can always sell a joke even as the weight of the world weighs on him, and the women around him – including former flame Madeleine (Léa Seydoux) and new 007 Nomi (Lashana Lynch) – prove his match at every turn. . The 150-minute film goes by quickly: Craig’s Bond couldn’t have asked for better.

Pair with: Brunetti’s Vespa Martini. It’s an Italian version of the classic Vesper martini that is served shaken, not stirred.

Last night in Soho

Eloise Turner (Thomasin McKenzie) is a teenage girl from a small town who has just been accepted into a school in a big city (the London College of Fashion, to be exact), where she hopes her obsession with the ’60s will finally blossom.

London turns out to be tough and ruthless, at least until she finds a very retro studio where every night she dreams of the past and the life of aspiring singer Sandie Collins (Anya Taylor-Joy). Can Eloise face the revelation that the ’60s were actually quite dark and shady, or will she shatter under the weight of her growing obsession with the past?

Writer-director Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs the world) takes a spooky turn in this sinister tribute to the ’60s. He’s clearly having fun recreating the past, and McKenzie is convincing as an ingenuous on the verge of insanity (or is she?). This time travel has a sting in its tail.

Pair with: Brunetti’s Calabrian pizza. It’s a great taste from the early 1960s.

The French dispatch

Writer-director Wes Anderson’s latest film (The Grand Hotel Budapest, Moonrise kingdom) has been described as “a tribute to The New Yorker”, And it’s hard to think of a more appropriate subject for his uniquely stylized places and characters. Focus on the (fictitious) staff French Dispatch of Liberty, Evening sun in Kansas as they prepare their final issue, its chapters include revolutionary students, a food review (which also involves kidnapping), and an incarcerated artist.

Anderson’s films often attract big names and to call this cast “all star” is an understatement. Starring Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Willem Dafoe, Edward Norton, Henry Winkler, Elisabeth Moss, Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody and Tilda Swinton – among others – it is filled with weird characters from Anderson, finely crafted visuals, and a keen sense of humor.

Pair with: Brunetti’s classic French mousse cake Le Parisien.

the leopard

Claudia Cardinale is an icon of Italian cinema and the 1963 Luchino Visconti classic the leopard is the movie that made her a star all over the world. Starring Burt Lancaster as a Sicilian nobleman and Cardinale as goddaughter, it’s a radical epic set during a time of upheaval as the old ways (which the Prince of Lancaster represents) are swept away by a new democratic future. .

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes and considered by Martin Scorsese as one of the greatest films ever made, its notoriety has only grown over the years. Screening as part of the retrospective of the Italian goddesses of Nova, it’s a rare chance to see this classic on the big screen.

Pair with: Conchiglie al pesto Siciliano from Brunetti for an authentic taste of Sicily.

This article is produced by Broadsheet in partnership with Lygon Court.

The film offered the Hollywood heavyweight an opportunity to tip the scales when it comes to the portrayal of women in spy films, including double-0s. In his words:

The 355 focuses on a global coalition of secret agents — American Mason “Mace” Brown, German Marie (Diane kruger), the British tough guy Khadijah (Lupita Nyong’o) and Colombian Graciela (Penelope cruz) – who embark on a murderous and frantic mission to recover a top secret weapon from the hands of a group of rogue mercenaries.
