local couple brings authentic Jamaican food to Green Bay | WFRV Local 5
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (WFRV) – Lil Jamaica serves Green Bay a taste of authentic Jamaican cuisine.
You might have seen Lil Jamaica’s food truck in town, but owners Nemard “Derron” Wilson and his girlfriend Janel Johnson expanded their business and built a salon at 1332 South Broadway Street in Green Bay.
The idea started when Wilson left Jamaica to come to the United States. He worked at a local bar preparing food at 9:00 p.m. until the bar closed for customers. Her friends told her to start a business and that’s when Lil Jamaica came along.
“We try to give people healthy food and give them a taste of Jamaican culture. There was nothing that truly represented Jamaica the way I know Jamaica, ”Wilson says.
As you enter the living room you will hear reggae music from the speakers and everything is decorated in Jamaican green, yellow, red and black.
Some of the customer favorites include Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork. Wilson jokes about the temptation to eat all the time.
The community aspect is what Wilson and Johnson embrace and both have been overwhelmed by how local businesses and customers have supported them.
“We love this community and it’s good because the residents of De Pere and even Howard make trips to town to come here,” says Johnson.
The couple also had a unique take on how COVID-19 hit their business.
“We have had so many people who came here for their birthdays this year when they had to cancel their anniversary or wedding trips, so they came here to celebrate their day with us. It was a huge honor for us as they got to drink their Red Stripe, eat their Jamaican food, listen to their Reggae music and talk to Derron. It made their day, ”Johnson said.
Wilson and Johnson say one of the best things about Lil Jamaica is to bring something different to Green Bay and to have diversity.
Lil Jamaica’s food truck is open from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The show is open from 12:00 p.m. to midnight from Tuesday to Saturday.
